A 32-year old ode...

I was going through some papers and pictures from my former life (1st vocation; I'm now on my 3rd) and I came across a poem I wrote out at sea 32 years ago (June 12, 1985, to be exact). Never said I was a poet (okay, maybe a closet one, but I'm not ready to "out" myself just yet...).

For what it's worth, I bring you

The Troubled Sailor

The night is now over
And daylight has come
And I am one day closer to death
I just close my eyes
Because I cannot decide
If living or dying is best

Dwarfed by a universe
I don't understand
I am all that is left of my hope
Nothing but water
And sky every day
My will to survive tries to cope

The warmth from above
From sun or from God
Keeps me afloat in this sea
But twilight has come
And a star stares at me
It isn't quite sure what it sees
