They broke in trough the bathroom window...

"Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." (Matthew 6:19-21 ESV)

...walked right past the Ten Commandments, and left through the front door...

I encountered an "essay" on the back page of today's Arts & Life section of the newspaper, which was a first-person account of discovering the front door ajar and the entire house ransacked and robbed.

You can read it here, if you'd like.

The entire narrative gives hints at the lifestyle of the author and his wife, a seemingly successful young couple with no children and a couple of dogs in a place that, by his own account, would appear to be an attractive high-end target for the type of person for whom breaking-and-entering is much more than a pastime. Particularly for the type of person who may have had reason to be inside long enough to take stock of "available" inventory.

It's such a shame that we have to alarm the premises when we're away; it's more of a shame when the premises hold valuables and heirlooms and we forget to press the button on the way out. It's even more of a shame that real perpetrator here is Sin (with a capital S) which still has a choke-hold on the world.

Those pesky Ten Commandments...

Well? We never could keep them anyway... I guess the transgressors should count their blessings (yes, yes, double entendre and pun intended). This was a low-end Commandments violation, hardly a misdemeanor in God's eyes, but far worse, in human eyes, than, say, a violation of the Fifth.

A question to close on: Are the alarm systems we pay good money for to guard our fortresses meant to keep others out or our treasures in?
